Capstone is a project at Springwater that all the eighth graders do. The student comes up with a project that will somehow benefit the school. Duncan had thought of doing his on recycling since the school started capstone in 2010, when he was a fourth grader. He liked the idea of doing a recycling capstone because he's always enjoyed helping the planet anyway that he can. Duncan is trying to see if educating the students and parents about the benefits of reusing will encourage them to pack less wasteful lunches. By packing a "waste free" lunch, Duncan means packing, for example, tupperware containers instead of plastic baggies or reusable juice bottles instead of juice pouches.
He hopes by educating and encouraging people to waste less, they will pack lunches with more reusable items and hopefully start wasting less at home, too.
He is calling it "Waste Free Wednesday" because he thought it sounded good as an alliteration and if he gets the parents wasting less on one of the days of the week (Wednesday), hopefully they'll start doing every single day.
